Kenyan security agents have dismantled what they term a planned terror plot targeting the capital, Nairobi.

In a statement on February 18, 2026, the Counter Terrorism Police Unit said months of surveillance and covert intelligence gathering on a terror network operating within the Dadaab Refugee Camps led to the recovery of arms and ammunition, including 600 bullets, pistols, grenades, explosives, and drugs, all allegedly destined for targets in Nairobi.

The unit added that the Somalia-based terror group had planned to attack during the month of Ramadan.

The terrorists, who had planned to attack during the month of Ramadhan, were also exploring possibilities of kidnapping foreigners and hijacking vehicles," said the Counter Terrorism Police Unit.

It also assured Kenyans that the capital remains safe from any acts of terror.

"Nairobi remains safe because of the brave young men and women in our security agencies who spend long hours tracking down dangerous terrorists and criminals," it added.

The foiled plan comes barely a month after a chief and a primary school teacher were killed in a suspected Al-Shabaab attack in Hulugho town, Garissa County.

The militants ambushed the victims in their homes on January 26, 2026. Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo confirmed the incident, saying security agencies had intensified operations in the area to track down the attackers.

“It is extremely unfortunate that we have lost two lives at the hands of militants. The late chief was a hardworking administrator who played a pivotal role in ensuring the area remained peaceful,” Mwabudzo said.

The victims have been identified as Hulugho Chief Abdifatah Gani and Stephen Musili, a teacher at Hulugho Primary School.

Garissa Woman Representative Edo Udgoon Siyad described their deaths as a “profound loss” to both their families and the wider community.
