Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said the government is accelerating the implementation of development projects worth billions of shillings in Meru County, describing the region as a key beneficiary of the administration’s infrastructure and economic agenda.

Speaking on Monday after inspecting the ongoing upgrade of Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital to Level 6 and reviewing preparations for the Gakoromone Modern Market in Meru town, Kindiki said the projects are intended to raise the county’s economic profile and improve service delivery.

“Meru is fully behind the President because of the development projects that are ongoing. That is why we are saying he should serve for two terms,” he said.

The Deputy President noted that the Gakoromone Modern Market has been allocated Sh1 billion and will rank among the largest in the country once complete.

He said construction is set to begin within weeks.

“We are starting the construction of Gakoromone Modern Market in a few weeks. I will bring the contractor here to commence the works and will make sure it is completed on time. It will cost us 1 billion shillings,” he stated.

In addition to the flagship market, 17 other modern markets are at various stages of construction across all constituencies in the county.

Kindiki also highlighted major road infrastructure investments, saying projects worth over Sh39 billion are ongoing across the nine constituencies of Igembe North, Igembe South, Igembe Central, Tigania East, Tigania West, North Imenti, South Imenti, Central Imenti and Buuri.

Within Meru town, roads are being upgraded at a cost of Sh3.7 billion to ease mobility and enhance urban status.

“We will build a total of 17 kilometres of town roads, and we will also connect the Eastern and Western bypasses to elevate the town’s status,” he said.

The Deputy President further announced that construction of a new Nithi Bridge, a critical transport link in the region, will commence at a cost of Sh7 billion.

On electrification, Meru County has received Sh2.3 billion to connect an additional 26,000 households to the national grid, in a move aimed at expanding access to power and supporting local enterprises.

“There is a difference between talkers and doers. It is a huge difference. We are fulfilling what we promised, we are not just talking like our opponents,” Kindiki said.

Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia welcomed the projects, pledging continued support for President William Ruto and his deputy.

“Meru is fully behind President Ruto and Deputy President. We have benefitted from various development projects, including the upgrading of Meru Referral Hospital to Level 6, Gakoromone Modern Market, roads and many more,” the governor said.
