Members of the Azimio Coalition in the Nairobi City County Assembly have strongly opposed any attempts to impeach Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, citing the need for stability as the city prepares to implement a Sh80 billion development framework under a newly approved cooperation agreement.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the legislators said they are unequivocally opposed to any attempts to impeach the Governor at this critical time, arguing that Nairobi stands at the threshold of historic development that requires continuity in leadership.
The coalition stated that their position is guided by the counsel of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, whom they referred to as “Baba,” to allow the Governor to complete his mandate.
“We remain guided by the last clear instruction from Baba that we allow H.E. Johnson Sakaja to complete his mandate,” the statement read.
“Our priority remains the fulfillment of the aspirations of the Broad-Based Government and the socio-economic advancement of Nairobi.”
The Azimio members also welcomed President William Ruto’s decision to invoke provisions of Section 6 (5) and (6) of the Urban Areas and Cities Act, 2011, to enter into a cooperation agreement with the Nairobi City County Government.
They described the move as “unprecedented and bold,” saying it would unlock development projects worth Sh80 billion for the capital city and significantly enhance service delivery.
“First and foremost, we extend our sincere appreciation to H.E. the President of the Republic of Kenya, William Ruto, for invoking the provisions of Section 6 (5) and (6) of the Urban Areas and Cities Act, 2011, to enter into a Cooperation Agreement with the Nairobi City County Government,” the statement said. “This unprecedented and bold step will unlock development projects worth Sh80 billion for the Capital City.”
The coalition confirmed that the County Assembly unanimously approved the cooperation agreement on Tuesday, terming the decision a demonstration of bipartisan commitment to Nairobi’s development agenda.
“This unanimous decision reflects a shared commitment across political divides to prioritize the interests of the people of Nairobi above all else,” the legislators stated.
They urged both the national and county governments to focus on implementation rather than political contestation.
“It is now time to allow both the National Government and the County Government to collaborate as intended under the cooperation agreement and deliver tangible results for our residents,” the statement read.
“The focus must shift from political rhetoric to implementation, from division to development, and from contestation to service.”
The Azimio lawmakers further rejected what they termed as attempts to create unnecessary noise or destabilize the city’s leadership, emphasizing the importance of unity and institutional continuity.
“Stability, unity of purpose, and institutional continuity are essential for the successful implementation of the agreed development agenda,” they said.
The legislators pledged to pursue constructive politics and development-driven leadership, urging all stakeholders to safeguard Nairobi’s stability and support the rollout of projects under the cooperation framework.
“Our message is clear: let us work together, protect the stability of our City, and deliver progress for every resident of Nairobi,” the statement concluded.
