The National Police Service has launched investigations into an alleged mass grave discovered at Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho County.
According to a statement issued on Sunday, officers moved swiftly to secure the site after the claims emerged, as authorities work to verify the reports and establish the facts surrounding the incident.
“Following the alleged discovery of a mass grave within the Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho County… officers from the National Police Service in Kericho promptly visited and secured the scene to preserve the integrity of potential evidence,” the statement read.
Police said the investigation is still at a preliminary stage, with detectives focusing on confirming the authenticity of the claims.
“At this preliminary stage, we are seeking to establish the veracity of the claims,” the service noted, adding that some witnesses have already recorded statements.
Authorities are also expanding the scope of the inquiry by identifying and interviewing additional persons of interest.
“Efforts are underway to locate and interview more persons of interest in this matter,” the statement added.
The service emphasized that the matter is being handled with seriousness, professionalism, and transparency. “The National Police Service assures the public that this matter is being handled with the utmost seriousness and will be conducted professionally and transparently to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident,” it said.
Members of the public have been urged to remain calm as investigations continue, even as police appealed for cooperation in providing any relevant information.
“Any person with information that may assist this investigation is requested to report to the nearest police station or law enforcement officer,” the statement said, also encouraging anonymous reporting through toll-free lines and the #FichuaKwaDCI platform.
Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the agency remains committed to “impartial, thorough and expedient investigations in accordance with the law,” with further updates expected as the probe progresses.
