Wetang'ula urges young politicians to embrace respectful, issue-based politics

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has urged young politicians to embrace respectful politics, warning that insults and personal attacks are fostering a toxic political culture.

Speaking in Kabuchai Constituency, Bungoma County, he called on emerging leaders to show respect to their seniors and focus on issue-based leadership.

Addressing congregants at St. Boniface Catholic Church on Sunday, Wetang'ula said Kenya's political discourse should be guided by respect and constructive engagement rather than personal attacks.

"I urged young politicians to respect their senior leaders and avoid insults that breed a negative political culture," the Speaker said on Saturday.

His remarks come at a time when the country's political environment has become increasingly charged ahead of the 2027 General Election, with exchanges between rival camps often marked by sharp rhetoric and personal criticism.

While emphasizing the need for civility in politics, Wetang'ula also highlighted several development projects that he said the Kenya Kwanza administration is implementing in Bungoma County.

Among the flagship projects, he announced that President William Ruto is expected to visit the county in October to officially launch the construction of the Sh10 billion Sichei Level Six Hospital.

"President William Ruto is expected to lay the foundation stone for the Sh10 billion Sichei Level Six Hospital in October," he said.

Wetang'ula explained that the African Development Bank will finance the bulk of the project.

"I clarified that the African Development Bank will provide Sh8 billion for the project, while the Government of Kenya will contribute Sh2 billion to complete the facility," he said.

The Speaker said the hospital is expected to significantly improve access to specialised healthcare services for residents of Bungoma and the wider Western Kenya region once completed.

He also pointed to ongoing infrastructure investments aimed at boosting economic activity in Kabuchai Constituency.

According to Wetang'ula, the government is constructing the Sh350 million Chwele Modern Market and tarmacking six kilometres of feeder roads to support the growth of Chwele Town.

"I also highlighted key development projects by the Kenya Kwanza administration, including the Sh350 million Chwele Modern Market and the tarmacking of six kilometres of feeder roads, which will enhance the growth of Chwele Town," the speaker said in a social media post.

Wetang'ula urged leaders to prioritise development and constructive engagement, saying respectful leadership is essential to fostering national unity and delivering meaningful progress for citizens.
