Efforts are underway to retrieve the bodies of five women who were buried alive on Monday afternoon after a gold mine they were working in collapsed in Rarieda, Siaya County. The women were engaged in routine mining activities at the Lumba gold mine site when the walls of a shaft collapsed. Mr William Owino, an artisanal miner who was part of the rescue team, said that only the five women were inside the mine when tragedy struck.
