In Summary

The Federal Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) announced the detection of the virus, following laboratory confirmation by the National Reference Laboratory on November 14, 2025.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has acknowledged the confirmation of a Marburg virus disease (MVD) outbreak in Jinka, in Ethiopia’s Southern Region.

The Federal Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) announced the detection of the virus, following laboratory confirmation by the National Reference Laboratory on November 14, 2025.

According to Africa CDC, epidemiological investigations and further laboratory analyses are ongoing.

Preliminary findings indicate that the virus strain detected shares similarities with strains previously identified in East Africa.

“As of 14 November 2025, Marburg virus disease (MVD) has been confirmed by the National Reference Laboratory.

“Further epidemiological investigations and laboratory analyses are underway, and the virus strain detected shows similarities to those previously identified in East Africa,” Africa CDC said.

Authorities issued the initial alert of a suspected viral haemorrhagic fever to Africa CDC on 12 November 2025, prompting close technical engagement.

Ethiopian health authorities have activated emergency response measures, including intensified surveillance, field investigations and strengthened infection prevention and control.

Community engagement efforts have also been launched to support early detection and limit transmission.

Africa CDC commended the Ministry of Health, EPHI and regional officials for their swift action and transparent communication, which it said were key in enabling rapid confirmation and containment efforts.

Africa CDC noted that Ethiopia’s ability to respond quickly is partly due to long-standing collaboration aimed at building the country’s molecular diagnostic and genomic surveillance capacity.

Through this partnership, Africa CDC has provided genome-sequencing equipment, sequencing reagents, PCR detection kits— including Marburg-specific assays—alongside extensive training in genome sequencing, bioinformatics, biosafety, personal protective equipment use and safe sample handling.

The core genomics facility at EPHI has been significantly strengthened with support from Africa CDC and partners such as the Global Fund, the World Health Organization and the UK Health Security Agency.

This capacity has been instrumental in facilitating rapid laboratory confirmation and improving Ethiopia’s overall outbreak readiness.

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), one of Ethiopia’s leading research institutions, has also benefitted from Africa CDC’s support.

The agency has supplied equipment, reagents and targeted training to enhance AHRI’s research and genomics capabilities.

As a result, AHRI is positioned to play a central role in the ongoing outbreak response.

Africa CDC pointed out that the current situation presents an opportunity to improve care for affected communities while advancing innovations in Marburg prevention, diagnostics and treatment.

To reinforce coordination, Africa CDC and the Ministry of Health plan to integrate Marburg response efforts with ongoing mpox preparedness and surveillance, a move aimed at optimising resources and accelerating early detection while reducing the risk of regional spread.

Africa CDC Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya is expected to meet Ethiopia’s Minister of Health to assess additional support needs and strengthen cross-border readiness.

Africa CDC reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Ethiopian government and partners to ensure a rapid, coordinated and effective response.
