Man charged for sending abusive WhatsApp messages to Mwea MP

A 34-year-old man appeared before the Wang'uru Law Courts in Kirinyaga County on Monday, facing allegations of sending offensive WhatsApp messages to Mwea Member of Parliament Mary Maingi.

While testifying before Wanguru Principal Magistrate Martha Opanga, the court heard that Joseph Muiruri Kamau had allegedly sent offensive messages to Member of Parliament Maingi via his mobile device on March 27, 2025.

According to the prosecution, Kamau deliberately used WhatsApp to communicate directly with MP Maingi, allegedly crafting a message containing inappropriate language.

The content of the message was described as indecent and offensive in nature.

It was further stated in court that Kamau was fully aware of the nature of his actions and that the message he sent would likely cause emotional distress or discomfort to the legislator.

Kamau pleaded not guilty to the charge brought against him.

The court released him on a bond of Ksh.100,000, with an alternative option of a cash bail set at Ksh.30,000.

The matter is scheduled for mention on April 28, 2025, allowing for preliminary discussions or directions from the court.

The full hearing has been slated for July 28, 2025, when the case will proceed in detail before the court.
