Speaker Wetang’ula calls for caution after fatal Webuye–Kitale road crash

The Monday night accident at Malaha Junction occurred on the busy Webuye–Kitale highway and has left several families grieving, with many survivors requiring urgent medical attention.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has expressed deep concern over the rising number of deadly road accidents in the country, following a tragic crash at Malaha Junction along the Webuye–Kitale road that claimed at least 14 lives and left 16 others seriously injured.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Speaker said the incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers on Kenyan roads, particularly during the ongoing rainy season, which increases the risk of accidents.

“Road carnage remains a serious concern for our nation, especially during this heavy rainy season,” Wetang’ula said.

The Monday night accident at Malaha Junction occurred on the busy Webuye–Kitale highway and has left several families grieving, with many survivors requiring urgent medical attention.

Wetang’ula called on all road users to remain vigilant and responsible while travelling.

“I urge all road users to exercise caution and vigilance, and call upon traffic law enforcers to strengthen safety measures to help prevent such tragedies,” he said.

He emphasized that careless driving and poor adherence to traffic rules continue to claim lives, despite ongoing public safety campaigns.

“The tragic accident at Malaha Junction along the Webuye–Kitale road, which has claimed several lives and left many families in mourning, is a painful reminder that even one life lost on our roads is one too many,” he said.

The Speaker also conveyed his condolences to the families who lost loved ones and wished the injured a quick recovery.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the families who have lost their loved ones. I also wish those injured a quick recovery,” he said.
“May God grant strength and comfort to the bereaved families, and may the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.”

Authorities continue to push campaigns addressing the rising road accident toll. Official figures indicate that nearly 5,000 people lost their lives in separate accidents across Kenya in 2025.

Reckless overtaking, speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol remain among the leading causes of accidents, according to road safety officials, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement and continued public awareness.
