In a statement on Saturday, April 11, 2026, the Kikuyu MP claimed the unrest was not spontaneous but bore the hallmarks of coordinated political attacks similar to those seen during previous periods of unrest.

National Assembly Majority Leader, Kimani Ichung’wah has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of orchestrating violence witnessed in Kikuyu Constituency, describing the incidents as organised and deliberate.

In a statement on Saturday, April 11, 2026, the Kikuyu MP claimed the unrest was not spontaneous but bore the hallmarks of coordinated political attacks similar to those seen during previous periods of unrest.

“The violence witnessed in our constituency today is organized and deliberate. It is not random chaos — in fact it bears the hallmarks of the same kind of coordinated political attacks we saw when political interests hijacked what had been peaceful protests,” Ichung’wah said.

He directly linked the incidents to Gachagua, alleging that the former Deputy President had been laying the groundwork for the violence in recent days.

“Rigathi Gachagua has spent the last week setting the stage for this violence so as to intimidate the people of Kikuyu to accept his political doctrine,” he said.

Ichung’wah further accused Gachagua of attempting to shift blame while maintaining that “violence sticks to him,” in remarks that underscore escalating political tensions between the two leaders.

The legislator claimed that individuals involved in the chaos included outsiders and criminal elements allegedly mobilised to disrupt peace in the area.

He questioned the motives behind such actions and challenged Gachagua to explain his conduct.

“Why does Rigathi find it necessary to mobilize outsiders, including criminals who have been robbing residents and motorists along the Southern Bypass, to come address people in Kikuyu?” Ichung’wah posed.

He also questioned why violence appeared to follow the former Deputy President’s political activities and contrasted the situation with other leaders who have held peaceful engagements in the area.

Ichung’wah called on the government to take decisive action, urging security agencies to investigate those responsible and ensure accountability.

“As the duly elected Member of Parliament for Kikuyu Constituency, I demand that the government takes action against Gachagua and his gangs of criminals,” he said.

He further appealed to the Inspector General of Police to immediately launch investigations into the incidents, pledging to provide evidence to support the claims.

“Any leader — regardless of who they think they are — who thinks they can cause the kind of violence we have seen in Kikuyu today and get away with it is greatly mistaken. No one, including Gachagua, is above the law,” he said.

Addressing residents of Kikuyu, Ichung’wah urged calm and restraint despite the tensions.

“Do not be intimidated. Do not be silenced. Stand firm, but remain peaceful and law-abiding. We will confront this through truth, justice, and unity,” he said.

He warned those allegedly involved in the violence that they would face legal consequences, stating that such actions undermine democracy and endanger lives.

The remarks come amid heightened political activity and tensions in parts of Kiambu County on Saturday.

Teargas was lobbed, and running battles were reported on Saturday as crowds gathered ahead of a rally by Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua in Kikuyu Constituency.

The confrontations followed earlier disruptions along sections of the Southern Bypass and nearby roads in Kiambu County, where groups blocked highways, lit bonfires using tyres and placed trailers across the road.

Traffic was paralysed at Thogoto and Gitaru, affecting motorists travelling to and from Nairobi’s western corridor.

Witnesses reported heavy congestion, with some drivers forced to turn back or seek alternative routes as feeder roads experienced temporary disruption.
