Rainfall expected across several regions as temperatures remain high, Weatherman says

In its weekly outlook covering April 14 to 20, 2026, the department said rain is expected in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South Rift, the Coast, northeastern Kenya and sections of the southeastern lowlands.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in several parts of the country over the next seven days, even as high daytime temperatures persist in many regions.

In its weekly outlook covering April 14 to 20, 2026, the department said rain is expected in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South Rift, the Coast, northeastern

Kenya and sections of the southeastern lowlands.
“Rainfall is expected in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Coast and Northeastern parts of Kenya,” the department said in the forecast.

According to the outlook, residents in the Highlands, including areas such as Nairobi and central Kenya, should expect cloudy mornings with occasional rains, followed by sunny intervals and afternoon or night showers that could spread to several areas.

In western Kenya and the Lake Victoria Basin, morning rains are likely in a few places, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms expected to intensify and expand across the region.

Coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale, are also expected to receive rainfall at different times of the day. “Morning, afternoon and night showers are likely to occur over few places,” the report noted.

Despite the rainfall, temperatures are projected to remain high in several parts of the country.

The meteorological department said maximum temperatures exceeding 30°C are expected in the Coast, northeastern, northwestern and southeastern regions.

In contrast, some highland areas are set to experience significantly cooler nights, with minimum temperatures dropping below 10°C in parts of the Central Rift Valley and areas around Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The forecast follows a relatively dry week between April 6 and 12, during which rainfall was recorded in only a few parts of the country.

“Mainly sunny and dry conditions were experienced over several areas with rainfall being recorded over few parts of the country,” the department said in its review of the previous week.

The report also noted a general increase in daytime temperatures across most regions during the review period, although some coastal and western areas recorded slight decreases.

Meteorological data showed that Lodwar recorded some of the highest temperatures during the previous week, while Nyahururu experienced the lowest night-time temperatures, highlighting the wide temperature variations across the country.

The department has advised the public to use the weekly forecast alongside daily and five-day updates for more accurate and location-specific planning.

“This forecast should be used in conjunction with the daily (24-hour) and five-day forecasts issued by this Department,” it said.

The outlook comes as Kenya continues to experience seasonal weather fluctuations, with authorities urging farmers, transport operators and the general public to stay updated on changing conditions.
