Volleyball: Wisa out as Munala to name squad on Friday ahead of KCB's Cairo tour

Speaking on Wednesday at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani, Munala said the team has been working hard in camp as they aim to bounce back after finishing fifth in last year’s edition of the continental tournament.

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Women’s Volleyball Team will be without captain Edith Wisa for the upcoming 2026 Africa Women’s Volleyball Club Championship, set to take place from April 11 to 24 in Cairo.

Head coach Japheth Munala is expected to name his final squad on Friday ahead of the team’s departure on Saturday.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani, Munala said the team has been working hard in camp as they aim to bounce back after finishing fifth in last year’s edition of the continental tournament.

“We have had a very good training camp and the players are responding well to the programme. Our focus is on improving our systems and ensuring that we are fully prepared physically and mentally for the challenge ahead,” said Munala. He added that it is time for the bankers to reclaim the title they last won in 2006 and again in 2022.

Wisa will miss the continental showdown due to personal reasons. In her absence, veteran Mercy Moim will captain the side. The team is currently in residential camp at a Nairobi hotel, training at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

“We know the competition will be tough because the best clubs on the continent will be there, but we also have a major boost with the return of Kenya international Esther Mutinda, whose experience is expected to strengthen our attacking line,” Munala added.

KCB has also bolstered its defence with the arrival of libero Josphine Kataa, while middle blocker Mildred Cherop rejoins the squad after completing a one-year stint in the United Arab Emirates.

As Munala finalizes his preparations ahead of Saturday’s departure, he is mindful of strong competition from fellow Kenyan clubs such as Kenya Pipeline and DCI Volleyball Club, who will also be targeting the continental title that KCB hopes to win for a record third time.
