EALA MP Winnie Odinga has dismissed claims of divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement, cautioning those who seek to weaken the party.

Speaking at the ODM@20 celebrations in Mombasa on Friday, November 14, she insisted that the party remains strong and committed to its mission even after the passing of her father, the late Raila Odinga.

Addressing supporters at the Mama Ngina Waterfront, Winnie used one of her father’s well-known expressions to illustrate the futility of the rumors.

“I have heard talk of division within the ODM party. Baba used to call that ‘kelele ya chura’- noises of a frog that can’t prevent the cow from drinking water,” she said to applause from the crowd.

Acknowledging that times of loss can cause confusion, Winnie emphasized that ODM’s foundation remains firm.

“When you have a great tragedy, people tend to get confused. I want to let people know that ODM is strong, we are building, and we are not here to play,” she said.

She also called out party members she described as having divided loyalties.

“I have heard there are those who walk with us during the day and then try to sell our party at night. ODM was not born in a bedroom, so its future will not be discussed as pillow talk,” she said.

The EALA MP reminded attendees of the party’s origins and the sacrifices made by its founders.

“ODM was born in protests and resilience. And some people have bled and sweat for the people of Kenya. ODM is the people’s party, and because the young people of ODM have conviction, we will continue working for the people,” she said.

Reflecting on the party’s 20-year journey, she underscored the enduring vision that inspired its creation.

“20 years ago, ODM was born out of a dream. A dream that the young people of Kenya will have a bright future. That dream continues to burn bright. As young people, let’s move forward together, with courage and unity,” Winnie urged.

She concluded with another quote from her late father, aimed at anyone seeking to destabilize the movement.

“Finally, to those trying to divide this party, I will leave you with one of Baba’s quotes: Hapana leta mchanganyiko bana – Don’t bring confusion here.”

The celebrations mark the party’s 20th anniversary, running from November 14 to 16 at Mama Ngina Waterfront.

It is the first major gathering since Raila’s death on October 15, 2025, and brings together founding members, youth leaders, and party loyalists.

Friday’s programme featured the ODM Disability League Breakfast, parallel meetings for women and youth leaders, and a youth concert.

Saturday’s events include a celebration of Raila Odinga’s vision at the waterfront and a Founders’ Dinner at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort.

Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, officially approved as the party’s new leader pending formal ratification by the National Delegates Convention, described the milestone as a moment to honor Raila Odinga’s legacy.

“As we commemorate this landmark, we do so in honour of the indelible legacy of our departed party leader, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, the father of modern democracy in Kenya, whose vision, courage, and sacrifice built this movement,” he said.
