Moses Omondi of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has been declared the winner of the Ugunja Constituency by-election, receiving a total of 9,227 votes.
The result reflects strong support for Omondi in a contest that attracted attention from across Siaya County.
Orodi Odhiambo from the Wiper Party came in second with 1,819 votes, while Fredrick Ochiel of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) secured 1,200 votes.
Other candidates included Benson Obol Otieno of the United Green Movement (1,171), Maurice Okumu from the Liberal Party Movement (381), Vincent Olengo of Kenya Moja (333), Chris Budo of KANU (188), Lilian Akinyi of the National Alliance Party (182), Erick Ofiro of the Jubilee Party (91), and Oliver Ochieng from the National Liberal Party (56).
Upon being announced as the victor, Omondi thanked residents for participating in the election, acknowledging that voter turnout was lower than anticipated but meaningful for the democratic process. He also extended appreciation to his competitors and encouraged them to work together to benefit the constituency.
"I thank Ugunja residents for taking their time and coming out, though they didn't turn up as we expected; the turnout was low. We hoped that they would have turned up more than this, but those who found time came out and exercised their democratic right by electing the second Ugunja MP. I also take this chance to express special gratitude to my competitors and I ask them to join me and let's work together so that Ugunja can continue to grow. That is what is important as at now. Thank you very much," Omondi said.
The by-election was one of several held across the country and is seen as a measure of political party strength ahead of the 2027 General Election. As the second MP of Ugunja, Omondi pledged to serve with dedication for the remainder of his term and prioritize development initiatives.
