ODM backs KNCHR’s compensations framework for victims of human rights violations

The party also called on the National Treasury and Parliament to expedite funding for the reparations process.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has expressed full support for the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights’ (KNCHR) ongoing development of a national framework for compensation and reparations to victims of human rights violations.

In a statement released on Tuesday, ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir described the initiative as “both necessary and long overdue,” noting that many families, particularly in the Coast region, continue to carry the burden of past injustices.

"For many families across the Coast region, and particularly in Mombasa County, the pain of past violations remains fresh. Lives were disrupted, livelihoods were lost, and in some cases, families continue to carry the burden of unresolved injustice," Nassir said.

The ODM official welcomed KNCHR’s approach, which goes beyond monetary compensation to include rehabilitation, truth-telling, and guarantees of non-repetition. He described these measures as “an important and progressive step” toward restoring dignity to victims.

Nassir emphasized that access to justice must be practical and responsive, rather than theoretical. He pledged that ODM would work closely with its Youth League in Mombasa and across the Coast region to establish support mechanisms for victims and their families.

These will include community outreach programs, awareness forums, and assistance with lodging claims with KNCHR, ensuring that documentation and reporting processes do not become barriers to justice.

"We are particularly keen to ensure that victims of protest-related violations, many of whom are young people, are adequately supported and represented. No Kenyan should be denied justice because they lack information, resources, or access," he added.

The party also called on the National Treasury and Parliament to expedite funding for the reparations process.

Nassir stressed that a credible framework requires sufficient resources to deliver meaningful outcomes and inspire public confidence.

ODM’s statement reiterated the party’s commitment to the rule of law, human dignity, and accountability.

Nassir affirmed that the party would continue to stand with victims, amplify their voices, and support efforts aimed at preventing recurrence of human rights violations.

"Justice delayed must not become justice denied," Nassir said, underscoring the urgency of timely action.
