President William Ruto has been recognised for his steadfast commitment to football in the country, receiving the CAF President’s Outstanding Achievement Award. The accolade, one of African football’s highest honours, was announced during the CAF Awards 2025 on Wednesday, November 19.
The award was collected on President Ruto’s behalf by Kenyan Ambassador to Morocco, Jessica Gakinya, reflecting the country’s growing influence and active participation in African football circles.
This recognition highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to boost sports infrastructure and create a strong support system for athletes nationwide.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed welcomed the news with optimism for the future of Kenyan football. On his official X account early Thursday, November 20, 2025, he expressed confidence that local players would soon be celebrated with similar accolades.
“Our head of state H.E Dr. @WilliamsRuto received a special award for his support towards football development in Kenya at the #CAFAwards2025. Kenyan Ambassador to Morocco, @jgakinya received the Award on behalf of the President. With the elaborate support structure the government is putting in place for sports and particularly football, I have no doubt our players shall soon be recipients of these coveted accolades as well,” Mohammed wrote.
The timing of the award coincides with Kenya’s widely praised hosting of the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The tournament drew commendation for its organisation, modern facilities, and enthusiastic fan engagement, further positioning Kenya as a capable host for major continental competitions.
Looking ahead, Kenya is preparing to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
The upcoming tournament is expected to elevate Kenya’s football profile, providing local players a stage to showcase their talent and helping the nation solidify its reputation as a key player in African football.
The CAF recognition for President Ruto shows the broader ambitions of Kenya’s sports sector, where government-backed initiatives are increasingly supporting athlete development, stadium upgrades, and youth programmes.
Officials see this as a milestone not only in Kenya’s football journey but also as motivation for players, coaches, and administrators to continue raising the standards of the game at both national and continental levels.
With the CAF award and successful CHAN experience, Kenya’s football landscape is poised for further growth, offering hope that more achievements and international recognition for players are on the horizon.
