Kenya Railways commuter link to Nyayo, Talanta: What you need to know
In Summary

Kenya Railways plans a new commuter line linking Nairobi CBD, Nyayo National Stadium and Talanta Sports City, reclaiming encroached land to ease AFCON 2027 travel and cut matchday congestion.

Kenya is sprinting into AFCON 2027 readiness with more than refurbished pitches and gleaming stadia — the country is reimagining how fans will move. Kenya Railways Corporation has revealed ambitious plans to extend commuter rail services to Nyayo National Stadium and Talanta Sports City, a move designed to turn matchdays into seamless, stress-free experiences for thousands of supporters.

PAMOJA momentum fuels infrastructure push

As co-host of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Tanzania and Uganda under the unifying banner PAMOJA, Kenya is pairing stadium upgrades with vital transport links. The government has earmarked Nyayo National Stadium, Talanta Sports City Stadium, and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani as key venues, with Nyayo set to serve as a central training hub thanks to its prime location.

Rail expansion to put fans on the fast track

In a statement, Kenya Railways outlined a concrete blueprint: construct a new station beside Nyayo and build a spur line from Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo corridor, via Kibera, and on to Talanta Sports City. The project promises a safe, reliable, and affordable transit option that will ease congestion, shorten travel times, and make attending matches far more accessible for the public.

Tough measures to clear the corridor

To make the rail vision a reality, the Corporation has moved to reclaim land along the proposed corridor. Property owners on designated railway land were issued vacation notices and warned that illegal structures will be removed. Kenya Railways says it is actively evicting encroachers and repossessing parcels needed for construction, stressing that demolitions will proceed without further notice and at the encroacher’s risk and cost.

What this means for fans and the city

Beyond matchday convenience, the commuter line is pitched as a legacy project: improved connectivity between sporting precincts and Nairobi’s heart, potential economic uplift for neighborhoods along the route, and a greener, more efficient way to move large crowds. For fans, the promise is simple — fewer traffic headaches, more time to celebrate, and a smoother journey to the stadium.

Next steps and expectations

With AFCON 2027 on the horizon, timelines and construction milestones will be closely watched. If delivered on schedule, the Nyayo–Talanta rail link could become one of the tournament’s quiet triumphs — a practical, lasting upgrade that keeps the spirit of PAMOJA rolling long after the final whistle.
