Ndhiwa Member of Parliament Martin Owino has cautioned locals against resorting to mob justice, noting that such actions have resulted in the tragic deaths of innocent individuals.
He referenced a recent case in which a butcher and his driver lost their lives near Kobodo trading centre in Kanyamwa Kologi Ward after being suspected of livestock theft.
Bob Ochieng, a butcher operating at Sikwadhi trading centre in North Kabwoch Ward, had enlisted Kevin Odero to transport a cow he had purchased.
However, on Wednesday evening, the two were attacked and killed by a mob, and their vehicle was set ablaze.
While addressing attendees at his mother’s 90th birthday celebration in Malela village, the MP emphasized that mob justice can result in the loss of lives for no valid reason.
"It’s heartbreaking that we’re now mourning two hardworking businessmen who were contributing to the growth of our economy, only for their lives to be cut short by mob action," Owino was quoted as saying by the Standard.
"These men had families depending on them—who will take over their responsibilities now?" he questioned.
Owino highlighted the importance of thoroughly verifying any criminal accusations before taking action against suspects, stressing that they should be turned over to the police.
"People must ensure that any crime allegations are well investigated, and if there is proof, the suspects should be handed over to law enforcement," he stated.
"The police will then take the necessary legal measures. We must stop the killing of innocent individuals."
The Member of Parliament also encouraged residents to work hand in hand with the police to eliminate crime in the community.
