In a public notice issued on November 2, 2025, KeNHA said the affected sections include Kilangata, Murkutwo, Chesongoch, and Kabetwa.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the closure of the Kapyego–Chesoi–Kilangata (B15) Road following torrential rainfall that resulted in fatalities in parts of Elgeyo Marakwet County.

In a public notice issued on November 2, 2025, KeNHA said the affected sections include Kilangata, Murkutwo, Chesongoch, and Kabetwa.

The agency warned motorists to avoid the route and replan their journeys due to safety concerns.

“The Authority is currently working tirelessly to access the affected sections and remove the massive boulders and debris resulting from the heavy storm water. Further, efforts are underway to restore the cut-off sections and restore mobility,” said Eng. Luka Kimeli, Acting Director General of KeNHA.

KeNHA stated that a multi-agency rescue operation is currently underway.

The mission involves the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, KeNHA, and the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet.

The authority also reported that the vented drift across River Mon at Chesetan along the Biretwo–Arror Road was overwhelmed by stormwater and collapsed, leaving approximately 40 metres of the road cut off.

According to the notice, KeNHA teams are working to access the affected sections, remove large boulders and debris caused by the heavy stormwater, and restore the damaged road segments to allow mobility.

“We urge all motorists plying these sections of the road to replan their journeys, as the roads remain closed for safety reasons,” the statement read.

This comes even as a deadly landslide was triggered by heavy rains, killing at least 21 in Marakwet East.

Dozens remain missing as the search enters another day, and many residents have been displaced.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who is coordinating government response efforts, said priority remains saving lives and helping affected households.

“We are working with utmost urgency to coordinate rescue efforts, extend humanitarian assistance, and stand with families affected by the Marakwet East landslide disaster,” Murkomen said.

Search and rescue efforts were suspended on Saturday night and continued on Sunday.

“We have paused our search and rescue operations for today. We have confirmed the loss of 21 people to this tragedy, while over 30 people are still unaccounted for as reported by their families,” Murkomen said.

He also noted that seriously injured survivors were flown to Eldoret for treatment, while those with minor injuries were treated in the area.

Relief supplies, including food and essentials, are being mobilised for affected families, with military and police aircraft ready to deliver support due to impassable roads.
