Leo Wamuthende of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has emerged victorious in the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election, defeating his closest competitor in a race that kept voters and political observers on edge.
Wamuthende polled 15,802 votes, narrowly beating Newton Kariuki, also known as Newton Karish of the Democratic Party (DP), who secured 15,308 votes.
The election, held on Thursday, drew considerable attention due to the tight competition and the constituency’s growing political significance.
Celebrations broke out immediately after the results were announced, with supporters in Siakago, Mutuobare, Kanyuambora, and neighboring towns cheering, singing, and carrying Wamuthende through the streets.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) confirmed the outcome early Friday, handing UDA a vital win in Embu County. The narrow margin highlighted the competitiveness of the constituency, where every vote counted.
Wamuthende thanked his supporters after being declared the winner. “I thank the people of Mbeere North for trusting me with this responsibility. This win is for every resident who believes in our vision for development,” he said, promising to focus on community projects and inclusive representation.
