The National Police Service has seen a major reshuffle as the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, moves six senior officers to new positions, aiming to boost efficiency and strengthen leadership in key areas.

The changes follow the retirement of several top officers and come at a time when the government is emphasizing national security reforms.

Adamson Bungei, who has been serving as Director of Operations at Police Headquarters, will now head the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons.

In a swap of regional commanders, Samuel Ndanyi, previously Central Regional Police Commander, has been moved to the Rift Valley, while Jasper Ombati takes over as Central Regional Police Commander.

Isiolo County Police Commander Paul Wambugu has been reassigned to the National Police Leadership Academy in Ngong. His position in Isiolo will be filled by Isaac Sang, who was previously in charge of Sports at Vigilance House. Donatha Kiplagat, currently Deputy Director of Training at NPS, will serve as deputy commandant at the Police Training College in Kiganjo. Tom Okoth, the Deputy Commandant of Traffic at Police Headquarters, will now take over as officer in charge of Sports at Vigilance House.

The reshuffle comes days after President William Ruto presented the National Security Report to parliament and launched the Jukwaa La Usalama report, highlighting his administration’s security priorities. The president also directed that “all police officers in the rank of Constable who are aged 50 years and above be promoted,” while the Inspector General finalizes promotion guidelines for other ranks.

In addition, President Ruto emphasized that “no officer will be transferred within one year of a previous transfer without considering their social situation,” and that no officer should serve in an operational area for more than three years. Officers aged 50 and above will be posted closer to their homes.

Former Police Spokesperson Charles Owino has also returned to the service and has been formally seconded to the Office of the National Government Spokesperson.
