President William Ruto has led Kenyans in mourning the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, remembering him as a fearless political actor, a generous friend, and a man who lived life on his own terms.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend, former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo,” Ruto said.
“Jirongo was a relentless go-getter, a seasoned businessman, and a consummate politician who refused to be defined, let alone defeated, by life’s challenges.”
Ruto described Jirongo as a fighter with warmth and courage, saying he never shied away from big ideas or difficult positions.
“Above all, he was generous to a fault; always willing to give, to uplift, and to back others with his time, resources, and belief,” he said, adding that his thoughts and prayers were with the family and friends.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula said he was shocked by the sudden loss, noting Jirongo’s role in shaping Kenya’s political journey.
“He leaves an indelible mark on the political landscape of Kenya as a political trailblazing youth in the 1990s,” Wetang’ula said. “His family and friends are in our prayers. Rest in peace, brother.”
KANU chairman Gideon Moi eulogised Jirongo as a principled leader who carried family values into public life.
“Jirongo was known to us first as a family man. He spoke with pride about his family and carried that sense of responsibility into every space he entered,” Moi said.
Recalling their long association, Moi said Jirongo was open about his beliefs and never hid his convictions.
“Over the years, we shared many moments with Jirongo. He was a familiar presence, and at no point did he ever hide his convictions. He was bold in thought and action,” he said.
Moi added that Jirongo played a visible role during a key period in Kenya’s politics.
“As a political figure, he played a visible and influential role in the country’s public life, particularly during the final years of KANU as the ruling party. He was energetic, fearless, and unapologetic about his views,” he said, extending condolences on behalf of the Moi family and KANU.
Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah described the death as a major loss to the country. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all Kenyans mourning this great loss, and pray that God grants them strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time,” he said.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna said the news came as a personal blow.
“I rise this morning to the news of the tragic death of my friend Cyrus Jirongo. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends and pray that God will comfort all of you,” he said.
Former presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame said he unknowingly passed the crash scene shortly after the accident.
“We saw the wreck as we drove past, but did not know he was the one involved. May God comfort his family and friends,” Kigame said.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi said he cancelled his birthday plans after learning of the tragedy.
“I woke up to the sad news of the loss of Hon Cyrus Jirongo through a terrible road accident. A good man at heart, an astute politician who spoke uncomfortable truths, and generous to the core,” he said.
“In his respect, I will not hold any celebration today. May the Lord rest his soul in eternal peace.”
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka said Jirongo’s passing had left a deep gap in national leadership.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo. His tragic death in a road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway is a profound loss to his family, the people of Lugari, and the nation at large,” he said.
Kalonzo described Jirongo as a bold and charismatic leader whose voice stood out in national debates.
“His contribution to Kenya’s public life and his distinctive voice in our national discourse will be remembered,” he said, offering condolences to the family and residents of Kakamega County and Western Kenya.
ODM leader Oburu Odinga said the party stood with the family during the difficult moment.
“It is with deep sorrow that I convey my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the late Hon.Cyrus Jirongo. On behalf of our party, and on my own behalf, I stand with his family during this difficult moment of grief. This is a great loss.”
COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli remembered Jirongo as a person who mattered deeply to both his community and the country.
“This morning, with a lot of shock and sadness, I learned of the passing of Cyrus Jirongo, who was an asset to our community and Kenya,” Atwoli said. “We loved him, but God loved him more. May his soul rest in peace.”
Jirongo, 64, died in a road accident early Saturday morning at around 3 am along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway after his car was involved in a collision with a passenger bus. News of his death triggered an outpouring of tributes from leaders across the political divide.
