Anti-Narcotics Unit detectives seized 180kg of suspected narcotic drugs worth Sh5.4 million in Ng’alalya, Mavoko, arresting two suspects as a third escaped. The DCI says investigations are ongoing.

Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) on Thursday arrested two suspects and recovered an estimated 180 kilograms of suspected narcotic drugs, valued at Sh5.4 million, during a precision operation in Ng’alalya, Mavoko Sub-County, Machakos County.


According to the statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the suspects, identified as 30-year-old Charles Otibong’or Muruga and 29-year-old Joel Dienya Swart, were intercepted in a flagged navy blue Toyota Auris, while the driver, identified only as Newton, narrowly escaped and is now being actively pursued.


The operation, conducted at around 2:00 a.m., was described by ANU officers as a “well-coordinated, intelligence-driven initiative” aimed at dismantling a narcotics trafficking network operating in the region.


Acting on intelligence, detectives intercepted the vehicle suspected of carrying illicit substances, quickly securing it before conducting a meticulous search.


The search yielded a significant haul, including three greenish gunny bags and eleven yellow-taped bales containing greenish dry plant material suspected to be narcotic drugs.

Preliminary assessments estimate the total consignment to weigh approximately 180 kilograms, with a street value of Sh5.4 million.


The recovered exhibits have been securely transported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters exhibits store, pending official weighing and sampling to ascertain the exact weight and value as part of ongoing investigations.


The two suspects, Muruga and Swart are currently in custody at Muthaiga Police Station, pending arraignment on charges related to trafficking in narcotic drugs.


The vehicle used in the suspected trafficking operation has been detained at Joska Police Station and is awaiting transfer to DCI Headquarters.


Detectives have intensified efforts to track down the escaped suspect Newton and dismantle the broader network believed to be behind the operation.


The DCI reiterated its commitment to combating narcotics trafficking and safeguarding communities from the devastating impacts of illicit drugs.
