Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has pledged sustained and decisive action against political violence, criminal gangs, and drug networks, saying the government will not relent until such threats are fully eliminated.
Speaking during a visit to Kimilili Town in Bungoma County, Murkomen said security agencies have intensified operations across the country, leading to the arrest and arraignment of more than 200 suspects linked to violent activities and organised crime.
“We will continue to deal with political violence, goonism, and criminal gangs decisively until our country is fully rid of these threats,” he said.
The Cabinet Secretary revealed that a recently deployed specialised police unit in Kitale and its surrounding areas has already yielded significant results, with dozens of suspects apprehended and taken to court within days of the operation.
He noted that the crackdown is part of a broader national security strategy aimed at restoring public order and addressing rising concerns over politically instigated violence and organised criminal activity.
Murkomen also announced that the government has stepped up efforts to combat alcohol and drug abuse, targeting supply chains and distribution networks as part of a comprehensive enforcement approach.
“In equal measure, we have intensified our crackdown on alcohol and drug abuse, targeting production and distribution networks, screening and interdiction at our borders, and holding those responsible to account,” he said.
The Interior CS emphasised that the fight against illicit substances is critical in protecting young people and safeguarding communities, warning that those involved in the trade will face the full force of the law.
He called on political leaders and stakeholders to support the government’s efforts, stressing that collaboration is essential in maintaining peace and security across the country.
“I call on all leaders to join us in these efforts, to keep our country safe and secure, as well as in our efforts to bring services closer to wananchi,” he said.
Murkomen was accompanied by Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa, with the two leaders acknowledging residents who turned out to greet them during the visit.
The remarks come amid increased focus on security operations nationwide, particularly in areas that have experienced incidents of political violence and criminal activity.
Authorities say the ongoing operations will continue, with security agencies maintaining heightened surveillance and enforcement measures to deter criminal elements and ensure public safety.
The government has reiterated its commitment to upholding law and order, warning that individuals or groups involved in violence, organised crime, or drug trafficking will be apprehended and prosecuted.
