Senator Oburu defends Ruto, questions political double standards

Oburu’s comments directly addressed critics who have labelled the President’s approach combative, particularly in rebuttals to opponents. He suggested that a double standard exists in judging political conduct, noting that criticism intensifies only when Ruto responds.

ODM leader Oburu Odinga has defended President William Ruto, questioning why the Head of State faces criticism for responding to political attacks while his opponents’ actions go largely unchallenged.

Speaking on Friday during an Eid-ul-Fitr luncheon hosted by the President at State Lodge Kisumu, Oburu appeared to justify Ruto’s increasingly assertive tone, framing it as a response to sustained criticism rather than an unprovoked change in style.

His remarks come amid growing public exchanges between political leaders, which have fueled concerns over rising divisions in the country.

“Mr President, I know that you have been abused for a long time and you kept those guns. I didn’t know you were keeping them somewhere,” Oburu said, in comments that drew attention and light reactions from those present.

“Now that you have released them, people are crying. I don’t know why, when it is you being attacked, it’s okay, when you are also releasing your arsenal, now they are saying it’s very unpresidential?” he posed.

He also welcomed the President’s visit to Nyanza, expressing hope that it would yield tangible benefits for residents. He praised Ruto for recognising the Muslim community during Eid-ul-Fitr, calling it an important gesture of inclusion.

“I hope your visit here is going to bring a lot more and I’m very happy you have recognised the Muslim community in our region,” he added.

The luncheon brought together a cross-section of leaders, including Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.

Ruto’s Kisumu stop is part of a broader five-day tour of Nyanza from March 20 to March 24, during which he is expected to launch and inspect key development projects. Among the flagship initiatives is the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway, which the government says will boost trade and improve transport across western Kenya.

Security has been heightened around major venues, with authorities urging calm and orderly conduct throughout the visit.
