Two suspects arrested in Rongai as detectives recover stolen police firearm

The suspects were identified as Cyrus Mureithi Mburu, 54, and Peter Kangethe, 49. Authorities said the arrests followed intelligence leads that guided officers to the locations where the suspects were apprehended.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested two suspects in Rongai, Kajiado County, and recovered a firearm that had been stolen from a police officer, in an operation targeting criminal activity within the area.


The arrests were carried out on Friday during an intelligence-led operation conducted jointly by officers from DCI Kajiado North and Ngong Police Station. The operation focused on Kware and Mandazi Road areas in Rongai town, where the suspects were tracked down following leads gathered by investigators.


“Two arrested, robbed firearm recovered in Rongai,” the agency said in a statement, outlining the outcome of the coordinated security operation.


The suspects were identified as Cyrus Mureithi Mburu, 54, and Peter Kangethe, 49. Authorities said the arrests followed intelligence leads that guided officers to the locations where the suspects were apprehended.


“The intelligence-led operation, conducted in Kware and Mandazi Road areas within Rongai town, led to the arrest of Cyrus Mureithi Mburu (54) and Peter Kangethe (49),” the statement said.


After the arrests, detectives searched Mburu’s residence, where they recovered a magazine loaded with 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition and a half-litre of gun oil.


“A search at Mburu’s residence resulted in the recovery of a magazine loaded with 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition and a half-litre of gun oil,” DCI said.


The search was later extended, leading to the recovery of a Ceska pistol that had earlier been stolen from an officer attached to the Security of Government Buildings.


“A further search led to the recovery of a Ceska pistol (serial number F9418), earlier robbed from an officer attached to the Security of Government Buildings (SGB),” the statement added.


Officers also seized additional items believed to be linked to criminal activities, including two imitation firearms, a pair of handcuffs, keys and a Maasai sword, all of which have been secured as exhibits.


“Detectives also recovered two imitation firearms, a pair of handcuffs, keys and a Maasai sword. All items have been secured as exhibits,” DCI said.


The suspects are currently being held at Ngong Police Station as investigations continue ahead of their arraignment in court.


“The suspects are currently in custody at Ngong Police Station pending arraignment, as investigations continue,” the agency confirmed.


The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance security and recover illegal firearms, adding that it remains focused on protecting the public and government property.


“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the public, protecting government assets, and relentlessly pursuing individuals involved in criminal activities,” the statement said.


Members of the public have been urged to support law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities, with the agency providing toll-free and mobile contacts for confidential reporting.


Officials say intelligence-led operations and coordination between security units continue to play a key role in tracking suspects, dismantling criminal networks and recovering stolen weapons across the country, with further action expected as investigations progress.
