The department noted that night-time (minimum) average temperatures are expected to be less than 10°C in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley and in the vicinity of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The country is set to experience largely sunny and dry weather conditions over the next week, punctuated by occasional rainfall in a few regions, according to the latest seven-day weather forecast issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD).

The outlook covers the period from January 6 to January 12, 2026, and is accompanied by a review of weather patterns recorded between December 29, 2025, and January 4, 2026.

In its forecast, the department said that “mainly sunny and dry conditions are likely over several parts of the country,” although some regions are expected to receive intermittent showers.

These areas include the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley itself, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coastal region, and the south-eastern lowlands.

Temperatures are also expected to remain high in several regions.

Daytime average maximum temperatures of above 30 degrees Celsius are forecast in the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya, as well as parts of the South-eastern lowlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands west of the Rift Valley.

At the same time, significantly cooler nights are anticipated in high-altitude areas.

The department noted that night-time (minimum) average temperatures are expected to be less than 10°C in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley and in the vicinity of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

A breakdown of the regional forecast shows varied conditions across the country.

In the Highlands west of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin, residents should expect sunny mornings followed by occasional afternoon showers in a few places, with partly cloudy nights.

Similar patterns are forecast for the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and surrounding counties.

In contrast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya are expected to remain largely sunny during the day with partly cloudy nights, while the Coast may experience isolated morning showers over a few areas.

The forecast comes after a week in which rainfall was recorded across several parts of the country, particularly at the beginning of the review period.

According to the department, “the highest seven-day rainfall total (89.1mm) was recorded at Wilson Meteorological Station in Nairobi County,” while Masii station in Machakos County recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall amount of 73.3mm on December 30, 2025.

Temperature extremes were also noted during the review period.

Wajir Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 38.2°C on January 4, 2026, while Nyahururu Meteorological Station reported the lowest daily minimum temperature of 6.4°C on January 2, 2026.

Overall, the department observed that daytime temperatures generally decreased across much of the country compared to the previous week, while night-time temperatures also fell in several areas.
