On Wednesday, ODMs National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved to remove Sifuna as its Secretary General.

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has described the 2027 General Election as a high-stakes, polarised contest, saying the political landscape is rapidly consolidating into two rival camps.

In remarks referencing the recent ouster of Edwin Sifuna as Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) secretary general, Kuria said the next election would be defined by clear-cut alignments, leaving little room for neutral or middle-ground politics.

“2027 will be mainly a mainstream politics game. The most bipolar election in 35 years of our multi party experiment,” Kuria said.

He added that the political environment ahead of the polls would not accommodate fence-sitters or alternative formations outside the two dominant blocs.

“There will be no option of driving on the service lane. All vehicles will be driven in either sides of tarmac. You may not like it but that is the reality,” he stated.

Kuria linked his own political shift to what he termed a growing inevitability of consolidation, saying the changing dynamics informed his decision to leave his previous party leadership position and join the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

“It is the same realisation that made me leave the lofty position of a party leader to join UDA,” he said.

The Cabinet Secretary framed the evolving political alignments as part of a natural democratic process, urging leaders across the divide to declare their allegiances early.

“The referee has called teams from the dressing room to the pitch. Let everyone including Sifuna and Co pick their jerseys from the two options available — Broadbased or Opposition,” Kuria said.

He maintained that such polarisation should not be viewed negatively, describing it as consistent with competitive multiparty politics.

“It’s normal, healthy and inevitable,” he added.

Kuria’s remarks come amid shifting alliances and internal party changes as political actors begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 contest.
