Flood death toll rises to 62 as Nairobi records highest fatalities

In an update on Friday, the ministry said the deaths include 46 men, eight women and eight children as authorities continue rescue, recovery and emergency response operations in affected regions.

At least 62 people have died following heavy rains and flooding reported across several parts of the country, with Nairobi recording the highest number of fatalities, according to the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.

In an update on Friday, the ministry said the deaths include 46 men, eight women and eight children as authorities continue rescue, recovery and emergency response operations in affected regions.

“Nairobi has the highest number of deaths at 33,” the ministry said in the statement.

The capital has experienced widespread flooding following days of intense rainfall that have submerged roads, homes and businesses, leaving many residents displaced and emergency teams responding to multiple incidents.

Beyond Nairobi, the Eastern Region has recorded the second-highest number of fatalities with 17 deaths, followed by the Rift Valley Region with seven.

The ministry said the Nyanza Region and the Coast Region have each reported two deaths, while the Central Region has recorded one fatality.

“Sixty-two fatalities have been recorded so far, including 46 men, eight women and eight children,” the ministry said.

Authorities said emergency response teams have been deployed in several counties to assist affected communities, conduct rescue operations and support displaced families.

Officials warned that the death toll could rise as search operations continue in areas where homes were swept away or residents remain missing following flash floods.

Heavy rains have caused rivers to overflow and triggered landslides in some areas, disrupting transport and damaging infrastructure.

Government agencies, including security personnel and disaster response teams, are working alongside local authorities to monitor the situation and provide assistance to those affected.

Interior officials have urged residents living in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and move to safer ground where necessary as the rains persist.

“Emergency teams remain on the ground conducting rescue and response operations in affected areas,” the ministry said.

Meteorological forecasts have indicated that heavy rains may continue in several regions, raising concerns about further flooding and possible additional casualties.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid crossing flooded roads and rivers, warning that strong currents and rising water levels pose a serious risk to life.

The government said it will continue issuing regular updates as response operations progress and assessments of the damage caused by the floods continue across the country.
