At least 81 people have been killed in floods caused by heavy rains in several parts of the country, with the capital, Nairobi, hardest hit with 31 victims.
In a statement on March 22, 2026, the National Police Service says the Eastern region has recorded 21 fatalities, while the Coast region has reported a total of five.
The Nyanza region has seven fatalities, the Rift Valley has eight, and the Central region has reported three.
NPS says the floods have displaced approximately 2,690 families and caused significant damage to property.
Police also urged caution as rains continue to pound most parts of the country.
“The rains are projected to continue across the country, and we urge members of the public to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, and to strictly adhere to updates and safety advisories issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department and other relevant government agencies,” NPS said.
It added that emergency response teams from the NPS remain on high alert and are actively deployed on the ground, “ready to respond to any emergencies or distress situations.”
Kenyans are also being advised to report any cases of emergency or distress at the nearest police station or through the toll-free numbers 999, 911, and 112, or via Fichua Kwa DCI on 0800 722 203 / WhatsApp 0709 570 000.
“The National Police Service, working collaboratively with other agencies, remains steadfast in its commitment to serving and protecting the public,” police said.
The update came as the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) warned over flooding on the Molo River in Nakuru County, located along the Eldama Ravine – Maji Mazuri – Molo Road.
KeNHA, in a statement dated March 21, 2026, said the floods have rendered the affected section unsafe for motorable traffic.
The Authority said the situation has been caused by heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas, which has led to a significant rise in water levels at the Molo River.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution and strictly follow instructions from police officers and traffic marshals deployed at the site to ensure their safety.
KeNHA advised that where travel is unavoidable, motorists can use alternative routes including the Eldama Ravine – Mogotio – Salgaa – Nakuru Road and the Eldama Ravine – Kabarnet – Marigat – Mogotio Road.
