NTSA orders fleet audit after Nyeri-Nyahururu crash that claimed 15 lives

NTSA has ordered an immediate fleet audit and stepped-up highway enforcement after a lorry–PSV crash on the Nyeri-Nyahururu road killed 15 people, amid probes into speeding and vehicle condition.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has ordered an immediate fleet audit of vehicles involved in a fatal crash on the Nyeri-Nyahururu road and ramped up enforcement along major highways to ensure compliance with road safety regulations.

The announcement follows a tragic collision on March 28, 2026, between a lorry and a Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV), which claimed the lives of 15 people.

In a statement on Saturday, NTSA’s Director General extended his condolences, noting that they are coordinating with the relevant hospitals to ensure the deceased are treated with dignity and that the injured receive immediate and necessary medical care.

“On behalf of the National Transport and Safety Authority, and my own behalf, I extend my most sincere and profound condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims. This is a heartbreaking loss, and we share in the pain of those who have lost their loved ones,” he said.

“We are coordinating with the relevant hospitals to ensure the deceased are treated with dignity and that the injured receive immediate and necessary medical care,” he added.

According to NTSA, preliminary investigations suggest that reckless driving, excessive speeding, and the operation of an unserviceable lorry may have contributed to the accident.

“If these suspicions are confirmed, this was a preventable catastrophe,” the Director General said, emphasizing that the NTSA will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact sequence of events, scrutinizing both vehicle roadworthiness and driver conduct.

The authority has dispatched a multi-agency team to the scene for a forensic reconstruction of the crash and to gather evidence.

The NTSA also announced it will conduct an immediate fleet audit of the PSV operator and the lorry owner to verify compliance with safety standards and licensing requirements.

“We are ramping up enforcement along the Nyeri-Nyahururu corridor and other major highways to remove unroadworthy vehicles from our roads, particularly commercial goods vehicles and PSVs,” the statement read.

The NTSA also issued a stern warning to all motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to exercise the highest level of caution.

“Recklessness on our roads is not a mistake; it is a choice that has deadly consequences,” the Director General noted, adding that any individual or entity found to have contributed to the tragedy through negligence or violation of traffic laws “will be held fully accountable.”

Further updates on the investigation will be provided as authorities continue to probe the crash.
