Ida's heartfelt reflection momentarily shifted the formal tone of the vetting, revealing the personal dimension behind her public service aspirations. Ida expressed sincere appreciation to President William Samoei Ruto for trusting her with the role of Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Ida Odinga opened up about her personal loss while appearing before the National Assembly’s vetting committee, paying tribute to her late husband, Raila Amolo Odinga, as she sought approval for a key diplomatic posting. She described Raila as the anchor of her life and career, emphasizing the crucial role he played in supporting her ambitions throughout their 52-year marriage.

The nomination hearing, held before the Departmental Committee on Defence Intelligence and Foreign Relations, saw Ida visibly moved as she recounted the influence her late husband had on her journey.

“I want to make special mention of my partner and my friend. My biggest supporter, my recently departed husband, Raila Amolo Odinga, with whom I have been married for the last 52 years,” she said.

“He always encouraged me and supported me as I pursued my dreams. He was a constant supporting pillar in my life who immensely contributed to who I am today. May his soul rest in peace.”

Her heartfelt reflection momentarily shifted the formal tone of the vetting, revealing the personal dimension behind her public service aspirations. Ida expressed sincere appreciation to President William Samoei Ruto for trusting her with the role of Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

“I thank His Excellency, the President, William Samoei Ruto, for the trust he has placed in me by nominating me to serve our nation in this important global diplomatic role,” she said.

She also acknowledged the encouragement received from Kenyans across the country, saying the messages of goodwill provided strength during a period of mourning and adjustment. Ida credited her family alongside her husband for nurturing and guiding her throughout her personal and professional life.

“I also thank my family and the people of Kenya who wished me well. My family and my husband moulded me and made me who I am today,” she added.

If confirmed, Ida will serve at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, advancing Kenya’s environmental priorities while amplifying Africa’s perspective in international climate forums. She stressed the importance of addressing environmental challenges and the direct impact on society’s well-being.

"How we manage or mismanage our environment will determine the quality of life we live. Through my work, I will address the devastating effects of environmental degradation, especially on vulnerable people in society. This is a critical moment when we have the opportunity to shape our environmental future," she said.

She further committed to championing Kenya’s and Africa’s interests at the global environmental platform.

"I intend to help stop the destruction of our planet and pursue all related priorities. I will be keen to ensure that Kenya's and Africa's interests are represented and working together with other parties to see that the impact of these actions is not just high-level but reaching out to the grassroots level," she stated.

The committee is expected to deliberate and submit its report to the National Assembly, where lawmakers will discuss and decide on her appointment.
