NTSA has launched an automated Instant Fines system to issue traffic penalties via SMS nationwide, with payments due in seven days and defaulters blocked from NTSA services.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has officially launched its Instant Fines Traffic Management System, a fully automated platform designed to issue traffic violation notifications to motorists via SMS.

The new system aims to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in traffic enforcement across the country.

In a public notice issued on Monday, NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa said the system “operates without human intervention, ensuring greater transparency, efficiency, and accountability in traffic enforcement.”

Motorists who receive notifications can pay the fines through the branch network of KCB Group within seven days of issuance.

Failure to settle fines within the 7-day window will result in the amount accruing interest. In addition, vehicles or drivers with pending fines will be restricted from transacting on NTSA service platforms until the fines are cleared.

“All fines issued through the system can be paid through the branch network of KCB Group within 7 days. Failure to settle the fine due within the 7-day period will result in the amount due earning interest. In addition, the vehicle or the driver with a pending fine will not be able to transact on NTSA service platforms until the fine is settled,” the notice read in part.

The automated system is part of NTSA’s wider strategy to streamline traffic enforcement, reduce human error, and minimize opportunities for corruption.

Motorists are urged to comply with traffic regulations and respond promptly to any official notifications received through the platform.

“This process is fully automated and operates without human intervention, ensuring greater transparency, efficiency, and accountability in traffic enforcement,” DG Baraban added, stressing that further details would be shared through official government channels.

The new system marks a significant step in modernizing Kenya’s traffic management framework, allowing authorities to monitor and enforce road safety regulations more effectively while giving motorists a convenient, digital way to manage fines.

Motorists are advised to familiarize themselves with the Instant Fines system and ensure prompt compliance to avoid additional charges and restrictions on NTSA services.

The launch of the Instant Fines system comes a week after President William Ruto ordered the rollout of traffic cameras in five to six major towns, linked to the NTSA Instant Fines system to automatically penalize offenders without the need for court appearances.

Speaking at the State House in Nairobi on March 2, 2026, when he received the National Council on Administration of Justice Report, President Ruto emphasized that the initiative will reduce corruption, streamline enforcement, and allow the judiciary to focus on serious cases.

“The cameras will provide full proof evidence that offenders are in breach, and we do not need to argue with them or drag them to court. The fine will be predetermined and appear on your phone instantly,” President Ruto said, highlighting the efficiency of the system.
