DCI begins probe over missing Raphael Tuju

In an update on the matter, the DCI said Tuju was reported missing by his family on Sunday, March 22, 2026. His motor vehicle was discovered abandoned along Miotoni Lane with its hazard lights on.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations into the reported disappearance of former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju.

The move follows a missing person report filed at Karen Police Station.

In an update on the matter, the DCI said Tuju was reported missing by his family on Sunday, March 22, 2026. His motor vehicle was discovered abandoned along Miotoni Lane with its hazard lights on.

The agency said a security guard from a nearby institution alerted authorities, prompting a swift response by officers from Karen Police Station.

“The scene was later processed by crime scene investigators and the vehicle towed to Karen Police Station for further forensic examination,” the DCI said.

According to the investigative agency, efforts to reach Tuju have so far been unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remains switched off.

A specialized team has since been deployed to handle the case and is working in coordination with other relevant government agencies to establish his whereabouts. The investigating team is also utilizing all available resources and investigative techniques to determine the circumstances surrounding his reported disappearance.

While carrying out the probe, the DCI said the late CS’s family has denied them access to his home located along Mwitu Drive.

“We urge full cooperation from all parties, including unrestricted access to relevant locations and prompt provision of information, for a swift and thorough resolution,” it added.

The agency urged members of the public who may have information regarding Tuju's whereabouts, or who may have seen him, his vehicle, or any suspicious activity in the Miotoni Lane or greater Karen area before, on or after March 21, 2026, to report to police.

“Information may be shared confidentially through the DCI Toll-Free Line: 0800 722 222, WhatsApp 0709 570 000 to report anonymously, or to the nearest police station,” it said.

“The investigation remains ongoing and further updates will be provided as significant developments arise.”

So far, several leaders have called for action over Tuju’s disappearance, including Oburu Oginga, who urged authorities to conduct urgent investigations into the matter and act with transparency as concerns grow over the whereabouts of the former minister and his driver, Steve Mwanga.

In a statement on Sunday, Oburu said he had been “informed of the emerging issues surrounding Hon. Raphael Tuju” and had “urgently called upon the government, through the relevant investigative bodies, to look into this matter with transparency.”

Presidential hopeful Eliud Owalo said he was “deeply concerned by reports that Hon. Raphael Tuju went missing yesterday evening,” and called on Douglas Kanja to act swiftly to probe the matter.

“I respectfully call upon the Inspector General of the National Police Service to urgently direct all relevant police formations and investigative agencies to commence speedy, thorough, and coordinated investigations into this matter, and urgently update the Kenyan public on the same,” Owalo said.

Former Chief Justice, David Maraga also joined growing calls for authorities to investigate the case.

“Ruto’s regime must produce Hon. Raphael Tuju and his driver without any delay,” Maraga said.
