The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Nakuru Water and Sewerage Company (NAWASCO) employee, Leonard Cheruiyot Mutai, over allegations of soliciting a bribe to facilitate the replacement of a confiscated water meter.
The suspect, who serves as a Leak Detection Officer, was apprehended on March 23, 2026, following a complaint from a member of the public.
According to the anti-corruption body , Mutai demanded Sh15,000 to process the replacement of a confiscated water meter in Langa Langa Estate.
Acting swiftly on the report, the EACC carried out an operation that led to the arrest of the suspect while he was receiving the bribe.
During the arrest, investigators recovered Sh15,000 on him, Sh100,000 hidden in socks, and an additional Sh18,000 from his coat pocket, bringing the total cash recovered to Sh133,000.
Following his arrest, Mutai was taken to the Commission’s South Rift Regional Office in Nakuru for processing and later detained at the Central Police Station.
He is currently being held on a Sh20,000 police cash bail pending the conclusion of investigations.
In a statement, the EACC reaffirmed its commitment to fighting corruption across all sectors. “The EACC continues to urge members of the public to report corruption and to stand firm against bribery,” the statement read.
The Commission emphasized that public vigilance and cooperation are crucial in curbing corrupt practices and ensuring accountability in public service.
This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by anti-corruption authorities to tackle bribery and corruption in public utilities, ensuring that citizens receive services without undue influence or exploitation.
NAWASCO officials have yet to comment on the incident, but the Commission’s swift action demonstrates a zero-tolerance approach to corruption.
