Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating alcohol and drug abuse, saying ongoing efforts are beginning to yield tangible results.
Speaking on Saturday, March 28, 2026, the CS said authorities have made significant progress in reducing the prevalence of substance abuse across the country, while intensifying operations targeting key players in the illegal trade.
“We have managed to reduce the rate of drug and substance abuse. We are continuing to target the major perpetrators and ensure we eradicate this menace,” Murkomen said.
The CS made the remarks in Chepterit, Uasin Gishu County, where he had joined family and friends for the final send-off of the late Councillor Elkana Kemei Terigin.
Murkomen emphasised that the government remains resolute in its crackdown, warning that individuals involved in the manufacture, distribution and sale of illicit substances will face the full force of the law.
He noted that a multi-agency approach involving security agencies and local administrators is being deployed to dismantle drug networks and curb the spread of illegal brews.
He further called on communities to support the government’s efforts by providing information that could aid in identifying and apprehending offenders.
At the same time, the CS urged local leaders to uphold responsible leadership and avoid engaging in politics marked by violence and the use of hired gangs.
“Leaders must shun politics characterised by goonism and violence and instead focus on uniting communities and fostering development,” he said.
Murkomen also addressed the issue of national registration, encouraging residents who are yet to obtain national identity cards to apply, noting that proper documentation is essential for accessing government services and participating fully in national development.
He said the government is working to streamline registration processes to ensure all eligible citizens are documented efficiently.
The remarks come amid renewed government focus on tackling drug abuse, which has been linked to rising cases of crime and social challenges in various parts of the country.
Authorities say sustained enforcement, coupled with public awareness and community involvement, will be key to eliminating the vice and safeguarding the wellbeing of citizens.
