Kenya's Masters finish eighth in South Africa event

Speaking on Sunday evening from South Africa, team captain Peter Nduati told Radio Generation that the championship attracted 457 master swimmers, with the Kenyan team fielding 16 swimmers who made a strong statement both in Africa and globally.

Kenya’s Masters Swimming national team finished eighth overall out of 23 teams at the 41st edition of the South Africa Masters Swimming Championships, held in George from March 11 to 14, 2026.


Speaking on Sunday evening from South Africa, team captain Peter Nduati told Radio Generation that the championship attracted 457 master swimmers, with the Kenyan team fielding 16 swimmers who made a strong statement both in Africa and globally.


“We were among 23 teams that came from countries such as host nation South Africa, Zimbabwe, Germany, Namibia and Singapore,” an excited Nduati said on phone.


“We have shown the world what we can do and hope the government of Kenya will support us as we continue shining on the global stage for our country,” he added.


Olive Njuguna won three medals—silver in the 100m backstroke, another silver in the 100m butterfly, and bronze in the 50m backstroke.


Lina Akoth scooped five medals, including two gold medals in the 50m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke, a silver in the 50m freestyle, and bronze medals in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle.


Consolata Kirubi also won five medals, including gold in the 200m individual medley and 100m breaststroke, silver in the 5


Jeremy Ndung’u narrowly missed a gold medal but settled for four medals: silver in the 50m breaststroke and 200m backstroke, and bronze in the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley.


Jacqueline Macharia delivered an impressive performance, winning five medals—three gold medals in the 100m backstroke, 400m individual medley, and 200m butterfly, as well as two silver medals in the 200m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke.


Clement Ngeci secured three medals—gold in the 200m butterfly, and silver in the 400m freestyle and 800m freestyle. Meanwhile, Anne Chogo won silver in the 200m breaststroke to complete Kenya’s medal haul.


The 16 Kenyan swimmers competed in the individual medley, freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke categories, with captain Peter Nduati leading Lucy Kavila, Alvin Chebii, Elvis Wanjau, Sally Ndiri, Segeni Ole Ng’ethe, Paul Dalizu, Clement Ngeci, Lina Akoth, Douglas Kimiti, Olive Njuguna, Consolata Kirubi, Jacqueline Macharia, Jeremy Ndung’u, Daisy Lumumba and Anne Chogo.


The team is expected to return to Kenya on Monday.

Elvis Wanjau collected three medals—two silver medals in the 200m breaststroke and 200m backstroke, and a bronze in the 100m backstroke.
