In Summary

KeNHA and NTSA have issued a joint safety alert as heavy rains create slippery, flood-prone roads across Kenya, warning of delays, closures and higher accident risks for all road users.

Motorists across the country have been urged to take extra care on the roads as heavy rains continue to fall, raising the risk of accidents, traffic delays, and flooded road sections. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) warned that persistent rainfall is already creating slippery surfaces and poor visibility, conditions that could endanger drivers, passengers, and other road users if caution is not taken.

In a public notice dated March 4, 2026, the Authority said forecasts from the Kenya Meteorological Department indicate that rainfall will continue in many parts of the country this season. The expected downpours, ranging from moderate to heavy, are likely to affect both urban centers and rural areas.

According to KeNHA, the ongoing rains have already begun to affect road travel in several regions. Reduced visibility and increased flooding risks are making driving more difficult, especially in low-lying areas that are prone to water accumulation.

The road authority cautioned that such conditions could result in temporary road closures, slower movement of traffic, and a greater chance of crashes.

Safety concerns have also been raised by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), which issued a separate alert warning drivers about the dangers posed by heavy rainfall, fog, and slippery road surfaces.

KeNHA said road users must follow safety measures to help reduce the chances of accidents during the rainy period. Among the key recommendations, motorists were advised to reduce speed and maintain a safe distance between vehicles.

Drivers were also urged to avoid overtaking when visibility is poor or when rain and fog make road conditions unsafe.

The Authority strongly warned motorists not to attempt to drive through flooded sections of roads, noting that fast moving water can easily sweep vehicles away or cause drivers to lose control.

Motorcyclists and cyclists were advised to wear reflective clothing or gear to improve their visibility during heavy rain and low light conditions.

Pedestrians were also urged to remain cautious and avoid walking too close to moving vehicles during storms. Slippery roads and poor visibility can increase the risk of vehicles losing control, putting people walking near roads in danger.

KeNHA said it will continue monitoring the situation across the road network and will respond quickly if any sections are affected by flooding or other hazards. The Authority noted that maintaining safe road access and ensuring connectivity remain key priorities during the rainy season.

The public notice was signed by Eng. Luka Kimeli, Director General of KeNHA, who reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting road users.

“Your safety remains our priority,” the statement read.

KeNHA also shared contact information for members of the public who may need assistance or wish to report emergencies. These include a toll free number and customer care contacts through which motorists can communicate with the Authority.

Officials stressed that safety on the roads depends largely on how individuals behave while travelling. The notice reminded road users that responsible driving and alertness are essential, especially when weather conditions worsen.

“Road Safety Starts With You,” the notice stated.

With rainfall expected to continue across many parts of the country, transport authorities are urging drivers, riders, cyclists, and pedestrians to remain vigilant.

They emphasized that following safety advice, reducing speed, and avoiding risky behavior on wet roads will help prevent accidents, reduce disruptions, and protect lives during the ongoing rainy season.
