Police officers in Kakamega County have seized about 48 kilograms of suspected cannabis valued at Sh1.4 million following an intelligence-led operation.
A public service vehicle was intercepted along the Kisumu–Kakamega Road, leading to the arrest of one suspect. Police said the drugs were concealed in several bags and packaged into multiple bales.
According to the statements released on Monday by the National Police Service, the narcotics were hidden “in several bags and a sack, packaged into multiple bales.”
The recovered consignment reaffirmed the scale of the operation and the potential impact of the seizure.
One suspect was arrested at the scene and immediately escorted to the police station. Officers confirmed that “the recovered narcotic drugs were secured as exhibits,” while the suspect remains “in lawful custody pending processing and arraignment in court.”
The seizure highlights continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to disrupt drug trafficking networks operating across key transport corridors.
Roads linking major towns, such as the Kisumu–Kakamega route, are often used to ferry illegal substances, taking advantage of heavy traffic and frequent public transport movements.
Police said the operation was intelligence-led, reflecting increased reliance on information gathering and targeted interventions rather than routine checks alone.
Such approaches, authorities say, have proven effective in identifying and intercepting illicit drugs before they reach local markets.

The service warned that such networks pose a serious threat to public health, safety, and national security, particularly through addiction, crime, and the exploitation of vulnerable communities.
Drug trafficking continues to be a major concern in many parts of the country, with cannabis remaining one of the most commonly trafficked substances.
Law enforcement agencies have increasingly emphasised collaboration with communities as a critical tool in tackling the problem.
Members of the public were urged to cooperate with the police by sharing information on drug-related activities.
The National Police Service encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities through toll-free numbers “999, 911, or 112,” or anonymously via “#FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.”
Police say such cooperation plays a vital role in identifying traffickers, disrupting supply chains, and preventing drugs from reaching users.
Community tips, combined with intelligence analysis, have been credited with enabling timely interventions such as the Kakamega operation.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to trace the origin and intended destination of the seized narcotics, as well as identify any additional suspects linked to the consignment. The case will proceed through the courts once the suspect is formally arraigned.
