In a public notice dated January 20, 2026, KeNHA said the removals are necessary ahead of the commencement of capacity enhancement, landscaping, and beautification works along the busy road section.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a notice directing roadside developers to remove all structures along the James Gichuru Road junction to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport corridor to pave the way for major road works.

In a public notice dated January 20, 2026, KeNHA said the removals are necessary ahead of the commencement of capacity enhancement, landscaping, and beautification works along the busy road section.

“The Authority hereby notifies all roadside development operators from the James Gichuru Road junction to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport of the commencement of capacity enhancement, landscaping, and beautification works on this section of the road,” the notice states.

KeNHA said all developments within the road reserve on both sides of the affected section must be cleared.

These include billboards, directional and advertisement signs, tree nursery beds, and all temporary structures.

The authority emphasised that such developments interfere with planned works and pose safety and operational concerns.

The highways agency further warned that billboards erected on private property must not overhang into the road reserve, noting that any such extensions would be treated as encroachment.

“Billboards erected on private property should not overhang to the road reserve as they shall be considered as road encroachment,” KeNHA said.

Operators and owners of the affected structures have been given a 14-day ultimatum to remove them voluntarily.

According to the notice, the countdown begins from the date of issuance of the notice.

“All the operators are, therefore, through this notice, directed to remove them within 14 days from the date of this notice. This is to pave the way for the implementation of the project works,” the authority said.

KeNHA warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period would result in forced removal without further reference to the owners.

It said any structures remaining after the deadline will be demolished at the owners’ cost.

“At the lapse of the 14 days (Wednesday, February 4, 2026), any structure on the said section shall be removed without further reference to the owners/operators, where applicable, at the owner’s cost,” the notice reads.

The directive was issued by KeNHA Acting Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli.

The James Gichuru Road–JKIA corridor is a key transport artery linking major residential and commercial areas of Nairobi to the capital’s main international airport.

The planned works are expected to improve traffic flow, road safety, and the overall appearance of the corridor.

KeNHA urged affected operators to comply within the set timeframe to avoid losses, reiterating that the project is part of broader efforts to improve highway infrastructure and connectivity.
