The President chaired the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change during the 39th African Union Summit, urging member states to align their efforts and resources toward practical climate solutions.

Africa must speak with one voice on climate financing if it is to unlock clean energy growth and industrial progress, President William Ruto said on Friday while leading a high-level climate meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The President chaired the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change during the 39th African Union Summit, urging member states to align their efforts and resources toward practical climate solutions.

“We must, therefore, unite behind climate-action solutions, including climate financing, to position Africa as the premier destination for clean energy, green industrialisation, and adaptation investment,” Ruto’s statement read in part.

He told fellow leaders that coordinated climate investment would not only address environmental risks but also strengthen African economies and open up lasting employment opportunities for young people.

With global investors increasingly focusing on climate-friendly ventures, he noted that Africa’s renewable energy capacity places the continent in a strong position to compete and attract green capital.

President Ruto arrived in Addis Ababa on Friday ahead of the 39th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly set for February 14 and 15, 2026. In a message shared through his official X account, he indicated that deliberations at the summit would centre on reforming the AU to improve efficiency and ensure long-term financial stability.

Leaders are also expected to refine Africa’s shared position on climate action, resilience, and access to climate finance, while pushing forward deeper regional cooperation and increased trade among member states.

Kenya plans to use the gathering to seek backing for its national transformation agenda, especially in infrastructure expansion, irrigation development, agro-industrial growth, and strengthening energy supply.

As the AU Champion for Institutional Reform, President Ruto will present a progress update on efforts aimed at making the continental body more credible, responsive, and less dependent on outside funding.

On climate matters, he is set to table the CAHOSCC report, reaffirming Africa’s collective stand on adaptation, resilience, and the need for sufficient climate financing ahead of upcoming global negotiations.

The summit programme also features the inaugural session of the African Continental Free Trade Area Committee, chaired by President Ruto. Kenya continues to press for faster implementation of AfCFTA to boost trade within the continent and enhance regional economic ties.

In addition, the President is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with other African leaders focusing on trade, investment, health cooperation, and security collaboration.

These engagements align with Kenya’s priorities, including key infrastructure projects, expanded irrigation for agro-industrial production, and improved energy security.

The 39th AU Assembly takes place at a time when African countries are working to strengthen regional integration while confronting climate risks and securing sustainable financing for development.
