At least 49 people have died following severe flooding caused by heavy rains that have affected several parts of Kenya, particularly Nairobi, the National Police Service has said in a statement providing an update on ongoing search and rescue operations.
In a press release issued by the Office of the Inspector General on Tuesday, police said multi-agency teams remain deployed across affected regions to assist with emergency response efforts. Authorities said the operations are focused on rescuing residents in vulnerable areas, evacuating those at risk, and supporting affected communities.
According to the police statement, the fatalities were recorded after intense rainfall on Friday, March 6, triggered widespread flooding in parts of the country.
“Following the devastating rains on Friday, 6th March 2026, 49 people have unfortunately lost their lives nationwide as a result of the flooding,” the statement said. “The National Police Service extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends who have lost loved ones during this difficult period.”
The police said the floods have also caused extensive displacement and damage to property and public infrastructure.
Authorities reported that 2,624 families have been forced to leave their homes due to flooding. In addition, several government facilities were affected, including police installations.
“A total of 2,624 families have been displaced from their homes,” the statement said. “Infrastructure and property have also been damaged in various parts of the country, including 16 police stations that have been affected.”
The NPS said officers are working alongside other government agencies and emergency responders to address the situation and maintain essential services despite the disruption caused by the floods.
“Nevertheless, we are working to mitigate these challenges and ensure the continued delivery of policing services to the public,” the police said.
Authorities also warned that the heavy rains could persist and urged the public to remain cautious and follow official safety advisories.
Police advised residents to monitor updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and other relevant government agencies as the weather situation develops.
“As the rains persist, we urge all members of the public to exercise extreme caution and continue following updates and safety advisories issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department and other relevant government agencies,” the statement added.
The police further encouraged members of the public to report emergencies, distress situations, or criminal activity through official emergency hotlines.
“Any distress situations, emergencies or criminal activity should be reported through the toll-free numbers 999, 911, and 112, or via the #FichuaKwaDCI line 0800 722 203 and WhatsApp 0709 570 000,” the statement said.
Muchiri Nyaga, Director of Corporate Communication and spokesperson for the National Police Service, said authorities remain committed to protecting the public as response efforts continue.
“The National Police Service remains unwavering in its commitment to protecting and serving the public,” Nyaga said.
Emergency teams continue to monitor affected areas as rescue and relief operations proceed across flood-hit regions.
