Ruto assures full government response to flooding

In a statement on Sunday, he expressed his sympathy for communities impacted by the adverse weather, saying, “My thoughts are with the families and communities that have already been affected during this difficult period.”

President William Samoei Ruto has assured Kenyans that the government is fully mobilised to respond to the ongoing heavy rains and flooding affecting multiple parts of the country.

In a statement on Sunday, he expressed his sympathy for communities impacted by the adverse weather, saying, “My thoughts are with the families and communities that have already been affected during this difficult period.”

The President said that last week, he directed the activation of a multi-agency response bringing together emergency services, security agencies, humanitarian teams, and technical departments to coordinate efforts and manage the situation effectively in Nairobi and across the country.

“Relevant agencies are also actively assisting with rescue and evacuation operations, as well as clearing blocked drainage systems and restoring access routes in affected areas,” he added.

President Ruto highlighted that the National Government is working closely with county governments to ensure the safety and protection of all citizens. Emergency food supplies and medical assistance are already being delivered to people affected by the floods.

“The government will continue to take every necessary step to safeguard lives, support affected communities, and ensure that no Kenyan faces this challenge alone,” he emphasized.

He also urged citizens to follow guidance issued by relevant authorities, including the Kenya Meteorological Department and the police, noting that these advisories are intended for public safety.

“Adherence to them will help us protect lives during this challenging period,” Ruto said.

President Ruto’s statement comes as the country continues to receive torrential rains , causing devastating floods across several regions.

According to the National Police Service (NPS),the heavy downpours have claimed 62 lives, including 46 men, eight women, and eight children, with Nairobi recording the highest fatalities at 33.

The floods have displaced more than two thousand families and caused widespread damage to infrastructure and property.

Several regions continue to experience intense rainfall, prompting authorities to urge the public to exercise extreme caution and follow safety advisories issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department and other relevant agencies.
