In a special gazette notice issued on March 13, the electoral body said the polls will fill vacancies in the offices of Member of National Assembly for Emurua Dikirr Constituency and Members of County Assembly for Porro Ward in Samburu West Constituency and Endo Ward in Marakwet East Constituency.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that by-elections for Emurua Dikirr Constituency, Porro Ward and Endo Ward will be held on May 14, 2026.

The commission stated that the by-elections follow the declaration of vacancies in the respective offices earlier this year.

According to the notice, the vacancy for Porro Ward occurred on January 5, 2026, while the Endo Ward seat fell vacant on January 27, 2026. The parliamentary seat for Emurua Dikirr Constituency was declared vacant on March 10, 2026.

The Emurua Dikirr MP seat fell vacant following the death of its MP, Johanna Ng’eno, who died in a plane crash in Mosop, Nandi County on February 28, 2026.

“Following the declaration of vacancies… there shall be by-elections in the above-listed electoral areas on Thursday, the 14th May, 2026,” the notice read in part.

The commission outlined key timelines that political parties, candidates and other stakeholders must observe ahead of the polls.

Political parties intending to participate in the by-elections have been directed to submit the names of candidates contesting in party primaries and the dates of those primaries on or before March 25, 2026. Independent candidates must also submit their names and symbols to the commission by the same date.

“Candidates intending to participate in the by-elections as independent candidates shall submit their names and symbols… on or before Wednesday, the 25th March, 2026,” the commission stated.

Official nomination of both political party candidates and independent candidates will take place on April 15 and April 16, 2026. Candidates are required to present their nomination papers to the respective Returning Officers between 8.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m., and again between 2.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. on the designated days.

The commission also announced that the campaign period will run from April 15, 2026, immediately after nominations, and end on May 11, 2026, forty-eight hours before polling day.

“The campaign period… shall commence on Wednesday, the 15th April 2026 and cease on Monday, the 11th May 2026,” the notice stated.

The electoral body also noted that voter registration and revision of the voter register in the affected electoral areas has been suspended until June 12, 2026, as preparations for the by-elections continue.
