NPS launches probe into fatal Nyeri-Nyahururu road crash that claimed 15 lives

The crash involved a collision between a lorry and a public service vehicle (PSV), and the injured are currently receiving medical attention at various hospitals.

The National Police Service has launched a thorough investigation into a fatal road traffic accident along the Nyeri-Nyahururu road on March 28, 2026, which claimed the lives of 15 people and left several others injured.

The crash involved a collision between a lorry and a public service vehicle (PSV), and the injured are currently receiving medical attention at various hospitals.

In a statement on Sunday, the National Police Service extended its “deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the deceased” and wished the injured a “swift and full recovery.”

The service confirmed that it is working collaboratively with other agencies to “ascertain the facts surrounding this unfortunate incident” and ensure a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the crash.

The police reminded all road users, including motorists and pedestrians, of their “fundamental duty and personal responsibility to exercise due care, caution and good judgment while using the roads.”

Traffic officers, in collaboration with other enforcement agencies, will continue to enforce the Highway Code to maintain safety, order, and efficiency along major roads.

Authorities also called on the public to cooperate with enforcement agencies and provide any information that could assist the investigation.

Anyone with relevant details is urged to contact the nearest police station or use emergency numbers 999 or 911, the #FichuakwaDC! toll-free line 0800 722 203, or the WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.

The National Police Service reassured the public of its “unwavering commitment to enhancing road safety” and pledged to provide updates as the investigation progresses.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority, preliminary reports suggest reckless driving, excessive speeding, and an unroadworthy lorry may have contributed to the tragedy, which the NTSA described as a “preventable catastrophe” if confirmed.

In response, the authority dispatched a multi-agency team to investigate the crash, ordered an immediate fleet audit of the PSV operator and lorry owner, and intensified enforcement along major highways to remove unroadworthy vehicles.

Motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution, while those found negligent will be held fully accountable.
