NACADA seizes Sh1m worth of bhang in Kitui raid

The early Thursday operation was carried out by officers from NACADA’s Nairobi headquarters, who mounted a coordinated raid on the suspect’s residence and linked commercial premises.

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has seized cannabis worth Sh1 million in a raid in Kitui County, arresting a suspected high-profile trafficker after weeks of surveillance.

The early Thursday operation was carried out by officers from NACADA’s Nairobi headquarters, who mounted a coordinated raid on the suspect’s residence and linked commercial premises.

During the crackdown, authorities recovered more than 5,600 rolls of ready-to-use bhang alongside cannabis in various forms and packaging materials, including rolling papers, weighing scales, polythene bags, and three rolling flags indicating an established distribution chain.

According to NACADA Chief Executive Officer Anthony Omerikwa, the suspect had been under close monitoring prior to the operation. He said the agency remains firm in its efforts to curb drug abuse, particularly during vulnerable periods.

“Today’s operation demonstrates NACADA’s unwavering commitment to protecting society, particularly at a time when schools are closed and children are at home for the holidays,” he said.

He further warned against the exploitation of young people, adding, “We will not allow drug traffickers to exploit this period to target vulnerable youth.”

Omerikwa also commended the public for supporting enforcement efforts and called for sustained cooperation in reporting suspicious activities.

The arrest has been welcomed by residents, who described the suspect as a long-standing threat to the community.

One resident, speaking anonymously, said: “This man has been a problem for years. Many young people have been affected by his activities, and families have been living in fear. We hope justice will be served.”

The raid is part of a wider national crackdown on drug trafficking following renewed directives by President William Ruto to intensify the fight against substance abuse. The suspect remains in custody and is expected to face drug trafficking charges.
