In a statement, the NPS spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, said the decision was taken by the Inspector General to safeguard the integrity of ongoing investigations and ensure accountability in the handling of the incident.

The National Police Service has confirmed the immediate transfer and recall of the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) in Ishiara, Embu County, following a fatal shooting incident that left two people dead and triggered parallel investigations by multiple oversight and security agencies.

In a statement, the NPS spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, said the decision was taken by the Inspector General to safeguard the integrity of ongoing investigations and ensure accountability in the handling of the incident.

“Further, and to allow for fair, transparent and impartial investigations, the Inspector General National Police Service has directed for the immediate recall of the Officer Commanding Station for the affected area,” the statement read.

The development comes after the shooting incident in Ishiara sparked public concern and prompted the deployment of senior investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters to conduct what police described as “thorough and in-depth investigations.”

According to the statement, both internal and external oversight bodies have since been engaged in the probe, including the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, which has launched its own independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

“The NPS is also aware that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority is equally seized of the matter and has begun its own independent investigations,” the statement added.

Regional and county security teams have also been dispatched to the area to assess the security situation and gather preliminary findings that may assist in the investigations.

The police service emphasised that accountability will be prioritised and pledged full cooperation with oversight institutions.

“The Inspector General wishes to assure the public that accountability for this incident must be exercised and the Service shall give maximum cooperation to the independent oversight body,” the statement said.

Authorities also called for calm among residents of Evurore and surrounding areas as investigations continue.

“While asking the people of Evurore to exercise restraint,” the statement noted, underscoring concerns over potential tensions following the incident.

The NPS further appealed to members of the public with relevant information to assist investigators through official reporting channels, including police stations and toll-free hotlines.

“Any person with any information regarding this incident is reminded to report at the nearest police station, a law enforcement officer or share the same via our toll-free numbers—999; 911 or anonymously via our #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000,” the statement read.

Nyaga reiterated the institution’s commitment to transparency and rule of law, stating that the Service remains determined to establish the truth behind the incident.

“The National Police Service remains committed to getting to the bottom of this tragic incident and assures the public of its steadfastness to the rule of law,” Nyaga said.

The fatal shooting has heightened scrutiny on policing operations in Embu County, with oversight agencies expected to independently review the conduct of officers involved and the command structure at the station.

Investigations by DCI detectives and IPOA are ongoing, with authorities indicating that further updates will be communicated once preliminary findings are consolidated.
