Born Adidja Azim Palmer on January 7, 1976, Vybz Kartel has become one of dancehall’s most influential figures, earning nicknames such as Worl’ Boss, Teacha, and the King of Dancehall.

Dancehall sensation Vybz Kartel is set to headline the inaugural Talanta East Afrika Festival, a multi-city celebration of East African arts and culture scheduled for May 2026.

The festival, which will showcase music, fashion, food, and performance art, is aimed at highlighting the region’s creative talent while promoting cross-border cultural exchange.

The festival’s itinerary was revealed during a press briefing in Nairobi on March 3, 2026, with organisers emphasizing its goal of positioning East Africa as a dynamic player in the global live entertainment sector.

Kampala, Uganda, will host the opening show on May 1 at Lugogo Cricket Oval, followed by Kigali, Rwanda, on May 2 at BK Arena. The festival will conclude in Nairobi, Kenya, on May 8 at Laureate Gardens.

Bushington of Tunez Records Uganda, speaking at the launch, described the festival as more than a series of concerts. “This is a platform designed to connect East Africans through our music, culture, and shared identity, while showing the world the energy and talent that exists in our region,” he said.

Co-organiser Mayanja Jackson added that the event is intended to be a lasting cultural movement rather than a one-off experience. He explained that the long-term vision is to create a sustainable regional platform that consistently uplifts East African creativity and facilitates cultural collaboration across borders.

The festival will target young audiences aged 18 to 35 and is leveraging social media campaigns to drive engagement ahead of the May tour.

Organisers also highlighted the expected economic benefits, including boosting tourism, creating jobs, and supporting fashion, food, and nightlife industries in each city.

To reinforce local involvement, organisers confirmed that all festival staff in each country will be recruited locally. East African acts, including Kenyan singer Charisma, will perform alongside Kartel.

Born Adidja Azim Palmer on January 7, 1976, Vybz Kartel has become one of dancehall’s most influential figures, earning nicknames such as Worl’ Boss, Teacha, and the King of Dancehall.

According to Rolling Stone, Kartel reached folk-hero status in Jamaica through provocative lyrics and a bold public image, captivating fans while sparking debate among critics.

His music catalogue includes hits such as Clarks, Ramping Shop, Summer Time, Romping Shop, and Dancehall Hero. Over the years, he has collaborated with international stars such as Jay-Z, Eminem, Rihanna, Major Lazer, Missy Elliott, Travis Scott, and Alison Hinds, blending dancehall with global rhythms.

Kartel also became the first dancehall performer to star in a reality TV series, Teacha's Pet, further cementing his influence in contemporary culture. His music and persona have inspired international artists, including Drake, who cited Kartel as a major influence on his own work.

Organisers say the Talanta East Afrika Festival is more than a concert series; it is a celebration of East African culture and creativity, designed to unite audiences across borders and spotlight the region’s talent on the world stage.
