According to the weather advisory, the regions likely to be affected include the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, the Highlands both west and east of the Rift Valley—including Nairobi—as well as the South-Eastern Lowlands.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an alert cautioning Kenyans to prepare for intensified rainfall beginning Thursday, October 23, 2025. The department said the ongoing rains will spread to more areas and increase in strength, with some regions expected to receive more than 50 millimeters of rain within 24 hours.

According to the weather advisory, the regions likely to be affected include the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, the Highlands both west and east of the Rift Valley—including Nairobi—as well as the South-Eastern Lowlands.

“Rainfall over the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and Highlands West of the Rift Valley is expected to increase to more than 30mm in 24 hours and extend to the Highlands East of the Rift (including Nairobi) and South-Eastern Lowlands,” the department said in a statement.

The department further warned that parts of these regions may experience heavy (20–50mm) to very heavy rainfall (exceeding 50mm in 24 hours), accompanied by strong winds and possible flash floods. “Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in some of these areas including Nairobi and may be accompanied by gusty winds,” the statement added.

KMD noted that flooding could occur even in areas where it has not rained due to water flowing from upstream locations. “Flooding may occur even downstream where it hasn’t rained,” the department cautioned, urging the public to be vigilant and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Residents have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid walking or driving through moving water, and watch out for strong winds that may cause trees, power lines, or weak structures to fall. “Stay alert and take the necessary precautions,” the department emphasized, adding that local authorities and disaster management teams have been placed on standby to respond to any emergencies.

The warning comes at a time when many parts of the country have been experiencing widespread rains that have led to localized flooding and transport disruptions, especially in western and central Kenya. The department urged Kenyans to keep following official updates as the situation unfolds in the coming days.
