Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo appeared before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday as the agency steps up investigations into alleged misuse of county funds totaling Sh400 million.
The probe, focused on county office construction projects, seeks to determine whether the funds were spent lawfully.
Investigators questioned Nyaribo at the EACC’s Nairobi Integrity Centre on Wednesday, recording his statement on claims of irregular procurement and awarding of a Sh382 million contract to Spentech Engineering Limited. The commission alleges the firm received payments exceeding the actual work completed.
EACC is also examining claims that the governor authorised payments to himself amounting to Sh18 million. The agency says these payments were disguised as ex gratia allowances and reimbursements for housing costs.
Earlier this month, the commission had formally summoned the governor through a letter sent to his legal team on December 8. The letter confirmed a rescheduled interview following a request from Nyaribo’s lawyers.
“The Commission is amenable to your request to reschedule the Governor’s interview and statement recording. Subsequently, the interview has been rescheduled to 17th December 2025 at 10 am, to be held at our Nairobi Integrity Centre offices,” stated the correspondence.
The governor’s appearance follows search operations conducted on October 28, 2025, in Nyamira, Kisii and Nairobi counties. These searches targeted residences and offices of county officials identified as persons of interest and aimed to recover documents and digital evidence.
Other officials under scrutiny include Lameck Machuki Nyariki, Director of Housing and Physical Planning; Peris Mose, Director of Roads and former Head of Procurement; Asberth Maobe, Chief Officer of Finance and Accounting Services; and Josphat Oruru, Chief Officer of Roads, Transport and Public Works.
EACC said the ongoing investigations will help uncover the extent of alleged corruption and economic mismanagement in Nyamira County, as part of wider efforts to hold public officials accountable.
